School Sporting House Names

House Names

Mullumbimby Public School currently has four house groups, Bligh, Hunter, Philip and King named after the first governors of NSW. Upon enrolment students are placed into either one of the houses. The houses provide an avenue for students to participate and engage in friendly competition in a range of school activities including sports carnivals. They also facilitate a culture of positive school spirit.

A proposal has been submitted by a member of the Mullumbimby Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) to change the names of the Mullumbimby House groups. The reasoning is the contextual relevance of the existing house names to current day students. The proposal puts forward that contemporary names would provide greater significance to students of today. The proposal suggests that whilst not limited to the following ideas, changes could be linked to represent the accomplishments of local people, local place names or local flora or fauna. The proposal has been tabled at a P&C meeting and a staff meeting. Both groups have agreed to further investigate the possibility of a change.

To facilitate an investigation, consultation will be undertaken. We are seeking the contributions of current and past school community members to determine if a change is to occur.
